Calling Palmer Station

A cool Antarctic summer
Sunlight all the while
Penguins mate and procreate
Sea ice in decline

There’s a desert on our doorstep
Water in our shoes
Forests turn to fields
Fields turn into flats

Somewhere there’s a scientist
Who mourns the loss of winter ice
And sails his ship all through
And over the little ice that’s left

Calling Palmer Station
Palmer Station calling
Planet Earth is sinking
Humanity is falling
What were we thinking?
Progression without blinking
Chimneys spouting big black smoke
Into the virgin air

Wintertime has lost it edge
It’s pleasant but it’s wrong
We’ve known it for a while
But it’s been going on too long

Down here in these low, low lands
The levees do their job
But if the sea keeps rising
We’ll need more than just a mob

And somewhere there’s a scientist
Measuring a penguin’s wing
When all it wants is to be left alone to live its life

Calling Palmer Station
Palmer Station calling
Planet Earth is sinking
Humanity is falling
What were we thinking?
Progression without blinking
Chimneys spouting big black smoke
Into the virgin air

I, I wish I could fly
I’d fly to Antarctica
To see it melt away
And if one day
The ice is gone
We’ll start anew
On the South Pole

Calling Palmer Station
Palmer Station calling
Planet Earth is sinking
Humanity is falling
What were we thinking?
Progression without blinking
Chimneys spouting big black smoke
Into the virgin air

Calling Palmer Station
Palmer Station calling…
